Ten people, including five children, remained hospitalized on Saturday (05.07.2025), following a serious collision involving two buses in Voula on Friday afternoon (04.07.2025). The shocking moment of the crash has been captured in a video obtained by MEGA, just minutes before 47 passengers were injured and transported to four hospitals across Attica.
The urban bus numbered 122Θ was moving normally along the right lane of Konstantinou Karamanlis Avenue when its 50-year-old driver failed to reduce speed and crashed into a preceding bus that was pulling away from the stop. According to telematics data, the second bus was traveling at low speed at the time of impact. However, due to the heavy weight of the vehicle, the momentum caused significant damage and injuries.
The 50-year-old driver is currently hospitalized under police surveillance. Her mother-in-law described her as someone who also drives large trucks for the municipality and may have felt dizzy during the incident. Meanwhile, the driver’s daughter insisted her mother never drives recklessly.
Among the injured, a 38-year-old woman with multiple injuries is being treated in intensive care at the KAT hospital and is expected to undergo surgery. “Even at speeds of 15-20 km/h, the mass of these buses can cause major deformations and serious injuries,” said Filippos Brezas, a forensic mechanical engineer specializing in traffic accidents.
It was also reported that unauthorized vehicles were parked on the designated bus lane at the time of the accident, forcing passengers to board and disembark directly onto the main road.
Concerns were also raised regarding working conditions, as some drivers reportedly work over 10-hour shifts, with one instance of the involved driver working a 16-hour shift earlier in the month.
Authorities are currently investigating the exact causes of the crash.
