The unprecedented incident with the thousands of dead fish that have appeared in the bay was subjected to an emergency preliminary examination commissioned at the Port Authority. The investigation under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office will take place in accredited laboratories and samples will be taken from both the dead fish and the estuary of Lake Carla in Volos to determine the cause of death, even the possibility that some substance has penetrated the fish organism. In addition, water quality will be checked. The research will take place throughout the coastline of Pagasitiko, where the dead fish are located, i.e. in a port of Volos, Anauro, Alykes and N. Anchialos. The examination will be occupied by the actions of the Region of Thessaly regarding the management of the Karla fence, as an autopsy revealed that dead fish exist both within the fence and throughout the tunnel. The phenomenon has employed the Management Unit for Protected Areas of Thessaly of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization of the Ministry of the Environment, which has in other cases concluded that these are freshwater fish, which are channelled to the Pagasitikos from Carla’s tunnel. “They are freshwater fish. Apparently, after the flooding that we had flooded the outskirts, we had an extensive flood. There ended up a number of fish from the adjacent channels and now these fish, as they drain the waters from the dam of Carla, part of them end up in the Pagasitikos”, Dimitris Claudatos, deputy professor of the University of Thessaly, told Mega.
