Vodafone Launches New Crete–Athens Subsea Fiber Cable via Milos

Vodafone Carrier Services is building a new high-capacity subsea fiber-optic cable system in Greece to connect Crete with mainland Greece, significantly enhancing access to critical internet services. Construction has already begun, alongside ongoing marine surveys. The system comprises two subsea segments—129 km and 163 km long—and terrestrial connections via the island of Milos and landing stations in Crete and Attica. Spanning approximately 340 km, the cable will link data centers in Heraklion, Crete, and Athens, supporting up to 180 terabits per second—equivalent to 25 million users simultaneously streaming 4K video. It will also integrate with the 2Africa cable system, already connected at Vodafone’s Tympaki (Crete) landing station; upon completion, 2Africa will interconnect 33 countries across Africa, Europe, and Asia. Vodafone Greece already operates an extensive subsea and terrestrial fiber infrastructure across the Aegean and Ionian Seas, linking Attica with the Cyclades, Dodecanese, Crete, and Corfu.
