Just days after the New Democracy parliamentary group meeting—and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s attempt to project unity among MPs—MP Georgios Vlachos has re-emerged with a new parliamentary intervention, this time directly addressed to the prime minister.
A Renewed Focus on Recycling Governance
Vlachos, ND MP for East Attica A’, submitted a formal question to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou. The query revisits concerns over the operation of Greece’s recycling system and calls for full parliamentary transparency regarding both its management and associated financial resources.
In his submission, Vlachos notes he had already raised similar concerns in a parliamentary question dated 1 August 2025—a question that, he states, remains unanswered. He adds that even during the debate on his topical question in the Hellenic Parliament in May 2026, no substantive responses were provided to the issues he raised.
Transparency Demands Extend to ‘Green Kiosks’
Vlachos specifically highlights the public tender for so-called “green kiosks”—small, decentralized recycling units deployed across municipalities. He requests full disclosure of all related documentation, including procurement and installation costs, tender procedures, participating companies, awarded contractors, and the operational framework for handling collected materials.
Political Context Adds Weight
This latest move gains added political significance given Vlachos’s recent public comments on New Democracy’s electoral prospects. In an interview on 21 July 2026 with Parapolitika 90.1 radio, he assessed that—under current conditions—the party’s goal of governing alone appears difficult to achieve. He left open the possibility of post-election cooperation, including with a potential new political formation led by former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.
When asked whether ND could cooperate with a Samaras-led entity, Vlachos declined to rule it out: “Why would I exclude it?” He clarified, however, that such discussions remain purely hypothetical and theoretical at this stage.
