Violanda: Efforts to Restart Production Amid Ongoing Uncertainty

One week after the fatal explosion at Violanda’s Trikala factory—claiming the lives of five female workers—production lines remain largely inactive. The company has pledged to cover employees’ salaries while gradually restarting operations at its other two facilities in Larissa and Trikala. Grief remains heavy across the local community and among Violanda’s workforce, and the incident has alarmed the broader food industry, prompting labor mobilizations scheduled for Tuesday, 3 February 2026. Restarting operations is vital for hundreds of workers in the biscuit manufacturing sector—but must be done safely. Violanda’s management reportedly called staff to clean facilities near the blast site, triggering an intervention by the Trikala Labor Center and inspection by the Labor Inspectorate to verify health and safety compliance. Violanda operates three sites: the damaged Trikala plant, a second facility in Makrychori (Larissa–Thessaloniki National Road, km 14), and Vitafree in Trikala–Larissa National Road (km 12). These vertically integrated biscuit units were halted following the official mourning period; now, some production lines are cautiously being reactivated. Investigations continue at the blast site, where propane leak detection remains ongoing—access is restricted and explosion risk persists, forcing temporary suspension of inspections last week. Violanda employs approximately 250 people directly, but many more depend indirectly on its value chain—from raw materials and logistics to sales and services. All stakeholders urgently await a return to operational stability to safeguard jobs. However, full recovery will take time—and even then, Violanda’s reputation and sales have already suffered significantly due to consumer backlash and declining trust. At present, no one can guarantee smooth business continuity post-tragedy, as consequences remain incompletely assessed.
