A speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized just under half a kilometer from shore while returning from an excursion to Hon Me Rut Ngoai Island — a small island near Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island. The incident claimed the lives of 15 Indian nationals.

Witnesses Describe Chaos and Delayed Rescue

According to officials and eyewitness Ashish Kumar — an Indian national who spoke with the Associated Press by phone — the vessel overturned moments after departing the island. “The boat hadn’t even gone half a kilometer when it simply capsized,” he said. Passengers reportedly shouted for help as they struggled in the water.

Kumar described how nearby boats rushed to assist, but added, “By then, it was already too late.” He also noted that no emergency medical care was available on the beach when survivors were brought ashore.

Rescue Efforts Amid Challenging Conditions

Vietnamese television footage showed turbulent seas and strong winds at the time of the accident. Rescue teams deployed life rafts and flotation devices to those in the water. Jet skis ferried survivors back to land, where bystanders administered first aid on the beach.

Authorities confirmed that 21 people were rescued and that all bodies have been recovered. Injured survivors were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Indian Prime Minister Expresses Condolences

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the tragedy. The incident has drawn attention to maritime safety standards for tourist vessels operating around popular destinations like Phu Quoc.
