Bulgarian telecom infrastructure company Vestitel has integrated Greece into its strategic five-year investment plan, committing up to €50 million. Viewing the country as a critical hub connecting Southeastern Europe with Central, Northern Europe, and the Mediterranean, Vestitel launched the first phase of its plan—already underway—with an initial €10 million. Approximately half of the total budget is expected to be funded by EU resources, while the remainder will come from Vestitel’s own capital. A cornerstone of Phase I is the establishment of a new high-capacity Point of Presence (PoP) at Digital Realty’s Attica facilities, supporting over 5 Tb/s and offering low-latency, resilient, and highly available connectivity to international IXPs and major ISPs. Concurrently, Vestitel is upgrading its local presence through Vestitel Hellas—active in Greece since 2004—to better serve domestic enterprises beyond traditional telecom partnerships. The company aims to expand offerings in Smart Cities, Smart Utilities, Cloud, AI, and Big Data solutions. Key among its initiatives is the Balkans Digital Gateway project—co-funded by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Digital)—which includes new North Greece–Bulgaria network routes, upgraded Thessaloniki–Sofia connectivity, and large-scale DWDM deployments. Phase II, set to begin in 2027, will introduce a new submarine system linking Thessaloniki and Athens, creating a North–South digital corridor to support growing data center demand in Attica and strengthen Greece’s role as a Mediterranean–Balkan–Northern European interconnection hub.
