Fire danger remains very high across Greece on Thursday, 23 July 2026, according to the official Fire Danger Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, under the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.
Orange Alert in Effect
An orange-level fire alert has been issued for three regions: Attica, Evia (part of Central Greece), and Rhodes (part of the South Aegean). These areas face a Category 4 fire risk — the second-highest level on the national scale — due to persistent heat and strong, dry northerly winds known locally as the ‘livas’.
This follows a red alert issued for Wednesday, 22 July, when extreme fire conditions were recorded nationwide amid intense heat and wind.
Authorities on High Alert
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has alerted relevant state agencies, regional authorities, and municipalities in the affected areas to maintain heightened readiness. Emergency response units are on standby to act swiftly in case of wildfire outbreaks.
Public Safety Advice
Citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution, especially in rural and forested areas. Activities that could spark fires — including burning dry grass or pruning waste, using spark-producing tools like angle grinders or welding equipment, operating outdoor barbecues, beekeeping with smokers, or discarding lit cigarettes — must be avoided.
Burning agricultural land remains strictly prohibited during the fire season.
