Greek Woman Missing After Venezuela Quake Rescue

Venezuela: Greek Woman Found Alive in Rubble Now Missing — Search Intensifies

in

A Greek woman who was miraculously rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building 13 days after a deadly earthquake struck Venezuela has gone missing — sparking urgent efforts to locate her. Rescue teams and members of the local Greek diaspora, alongside the area’s Orthodox priest, are conducting a painstaking, door-to-door and phone-by-phone search across makeshift medical centers and hospitals, as no official records of survivors or injured exist amid Venezuela’s crumbling state infrastructure.

Uncertain Fate Amid Chaos

Her current condition remains unknown. It is unclear whether she is hospitalized, whether she was alone at the time of the collapse, or even where she was taken after being pulled from the ruins of the apartment building that buried her. Authorities have not issued any formal update on her status.

Three other homes belonging to Greeks in the region were also completely destroyed in the disaster — fortunately, with no reported fatalities among them.

Mounting Death Toll and Widespread Devastation

The latest official death toll from the twin earthquakes that hit Venezuela on June 24 stands at 3,685, according to a government announcement released on Tuesday, July 7. The previous official count had been 3,535. In addition, 16,740 people have been reported injured.

Authorities have declined to estimate the number of missing persons. The United Nations estimates the figure could reach as high as 50,000, while other sources suggest a figure closer to 10,000.
