The well-known Edward Hotel in La Guaira—a coastal city just east of Caracas, Venezuela—has completely collapsed following a powerful double earthquake, leaving only rubble and casualties in its wake.
Devastating Quakes Hit Venezuela
Two major tremors, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck Venezuela, triggering widespread destruction. The Edward Hotel, a multi-storey building, was reduced to near-total ruins.
Families of Venezuelan Baseball Players Among Victims
According to local media reports, relatives of prominent Venezuelan baseball players Gorkys Hernández and Eliézer Alfonzo were among those killed in the collapse. Both athletes have played in Major League Baseball (MLB), with Hernández appearing for teams including the San Francisco Giants and Detroit Tigers, and Alfonso for the Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets.
Rescue Efforts Continue Amid Rubble
Search-and-rescue teams are still working at the site, combing through the debris for possible survivors and recovering victims. Graphic images circulating online show the extent of the devastation, with little remaining of the former structure.
