The humanitarian crisis in Venezuela continues to deepen following twin powerful earthquakes and their aftershocks. The death toll has risen to 1,719, with 5,034 injured. More than 58,000 buildings have been damaged or completely destroyed.

International Rescue Effort Underway

Search and rescue teams from 27 countries have deployed to the hardest-hit areas. Around 2,200 rescuers and over 160 specially trained dogs are combing through rubble for survivors. These canine units access spaces too narrow or unstable for humans—and use their acute senses of smell and hearing to detect signs of life, alerting their handlers instantly.

‘Tsunami the Rescuer’: A Hero’s Final Mission

Among them stands Tsunami—a 9-year-old Border Collie and one of the Venezuelan Fire Department’s most decorated search-and-rescue dogs. Nicknamed ‘Tsunami rescatista’ (‘Tsunami the Rescuer’), he is nearing retirement due to age—but not before completing what will be his final mission.

During this operation, Tsunami helped locate more than 30 people trapped beneath collapsed structures. One particularly emotional moment came when he precisely indicated the location of an elderly man who was pulled out alive after hours of intense effort.

From Stray to Star Rescuer

Tsunami’s own story is as moving as his work. Once a stray dog surviving on the streets of Caracas—emaciated and abandoned—he was taken in by firefighters, trained, and transformed into one of Venezuela’s most skilled rescue dogs. His career includes deployments to disaster zones in Turkey and Syria, and media reports from Caracas confirm he has helped locate dozens of survivors across multiple catastrophes.

His legacy—built on empathy, resilience, and unwavering dedication—has captured hearts worldwide.
