Venezuela is enduring one of the worst humanitarian crises in its modern history following a catastrophic double earthquake that flattened large parts of the country. The official death toll has now reached 4,734, with 16,740 injured and 17,907 left homeless — up from the previous official count of 4,561 fatalities.
Mass Displacement and Emergency Needs
Authorities have stopped publicly reporting the number of missing persons. In the first 24 hours after the quakes, the United Nations estimated as many as 50,000 people were unaccounted for. Thousands of survivors now live in makeshift camps, queuing for basic necessities like food and blankets.
Seismic Impact and Damage
The twin earthquakes — measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale — struck just 39 seconds apart, causing widespread destruction across northern Venezuela, including Caracas and its suburbs, as well as the neighboring state of La Guaira. In La Guaira alone, thousands of displaced residents are sheltering in informal settlements.
According to Jorge Rodríguez, President of Venezuela’s National Assembly, more than 19,500 affected people are currently housed in these camps. Rescue teams from Venezuela and other countries continue their grueling efforts to recover bodies from the rubble.
Official data indicates over 850 buildings sustained damage, with 190 collapsing entirely.
International Aid Arrives
International assistance continues to flow into the Latin American nation. A Russian cargo flight carrying food and emergency supplies for survivors landed yesterday, Foreign Minister Yvan Gil announced via Telegram.
