Vasileios Papavasiliou: Farewell to the Renowned Greek Director

The renowned Greek theater director, Vasileios Papavasiliou, who left behind a significant void in the world of theater and the entire artistic community, will be bid farewell at his funeral on Wednesday, June 11. The celebrated director passed away at the age of 76 after battling serious health issues for several years. Recently, he had been hospitalized for a month in a public hospital. Spyros Bampilas announced on Saturday evening (07.06.2025) that Papavasiliou’s funeral would take place at the Holy Temple of Agia Sophia in Meropio Acropolis, followed by burial at the First Cemetery of Athens. ‘The requiem for our beloved Vasileios Papavasiliou will be sung on Wednesday, 11/06/25, at 11:30 p.m., from the Holy Temple of Agia Sophia in Meropio Acropolis. The burial will immediately follow at the First Cemetery of Athens. There we will bid our final farewell to our beloved Vasileios,’ announced Spyros Bampilas via his post. Born in Thessaloniki in 1949, Papavasiliou initially pursued studies in Medicine at the Aristotle University but soon found his calling in the art of acting. He enrolled in the Dramatic School of Art Theater, where he began carving his path in the theatrical landscape of Greece. Throughout his career spanning 32 years, he directed 30 plays, including works by classic and contemporary writers such as Sophocles, Goldoni, Marivaux, Horvath, Bond, Shakespeare, Pirandello, Molière, Anagnostakis, Staikos, Maniotis, among others. Additionally, he engaged in translating theatrical and literary texts, working on pieces by authors like Goldoni, Bond, Molière, Barthes, Sartre, and many more.
