Ukrainian billionaire oligarch Vadym Yermolaiev was critically injured in a targeted bombing at his luxury residence in Monaco on the evening of Monday, 29 June 2026. A homemade explosive device — packed with bolts and metal shrapnel — detonated in the building’s lobby, leaving Yermolaiev fighting for his life. Two other members of his family were also wounded in the attack.

A Prominent Oligarch with International Ties

Yermolaiev, ranked as Ukraine’s 23rd wealthiest individual, has lived in Monaco for several years. He acquired Cypriot citizenship in 2017, citing a need for ‘international protection’ amid concerns over the independence and effectiveness of Ukraine’s judicial system — a statement he previously made to Forbes.

He is best known for his role in developing major infrastructure and commercial projects in Dnipro, Ukraine, and is closely associated with the Alef Group — a diversified industrial and trading conglomerate founded in 1997. Its interests span real estate, manufacturing, agriculture, alcohol production, and wholesale trade. Alef Estate, established in 2001, focuses specifically on commercial construction.

Luxury Lifestyle and Sanctions

Yermolaiev and his family have long maintained a high-profile, affluent lifestyle in Monaco. His black Bentley, bearing Ukrainian license plates, has frequently been seen parked near the Casino de Monte-Carlo’s main square. He also owns a Ukrainian-flagged superyacht and a high-security villa in nearby Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

Since December 2023, Yermolaiev has been under Ukrainian sanctions imposed by the National Security and Defense Council and personally approved by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The sanctions stem from his continued business dealings with Crimea — a region annexed by Russia in 2014 — particularly the sale of alcoholic beverages there.

Manhunt Underway

According to CCTV footage, a suspect placed a backpack containing the explosive device at the building’s entrance around 9 p.m. before fleeing the scene. As of now, the attacker remains at large. Authorities in Monaco have not yet officially confirmed the identities of the victims. Monaco’s Attorney General Stéphane Tribou is expected to hold a press briefing, following an announcement by Head of Government Christophe Mirmand.
