USA: Department of Veterans Affairs to Eliminate 80,000 Jobs

The US government plans to proceed with 80,000 layoffs at the Department of Veterans Affairs, one of the largest employers of public employees in the country. Nearly 80,000 jobs will be eliminated over time, announced a government official from Donald Trump’s administration in an internal memorandum addressed to the VA staff on Wednesday (05.03.2005). The initial goal of the department is to return to the workforce size it had in 2019, with 399,957 employees, as explained by the director of the ministerial office in the related memo, while the number of staff in February approached 480,000. This initiative aligns with the campaign to reduce public spending and federal employees advocated by the Trump administration, a mission led by Elon Musk and the DOGE committee he chairs.
