White House: Contacts with Taliban needed to free civilians after August 31

Biden entrusts the Department of Homeland Security with the management of Afghan refugees

The United States will have contacts with the Taliban to ensure the safe release of people from Afghanistan after the August 31st deadline for troops to leave, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

Psaki said President Biden had instructed Foreign Minister Anthony Blinken to hold talks with international partners to determine what the way forward in Afghanistan would look like.

US President Joe Biden has instructed the Department of Homeland Security to lead the relocation of Afghans who have fled their country and are arriving in the United States, the White House has said.
