U.S. envoy for the Middle East, Thomas Barack, announced today (29.05.2025) from Damascus that Washington believes in achieving peace between Syria and Israel. He emphasized the need to initiate dialogue for a non-aggression pact and border determination between the two countries. Officially, Syria and Israel have remained in a state of war since 1948. ‘The issue between Syria and Israel can be resolved,’ Barack stated on the Saudi television network Al-Arabiya. ‘We must start correctly with a non-aggression agreement,’ he stressed while inaugurating the residence of the American ambassador in the Syrian capital. The American embassy had been closed for over a decade. Barack also revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump will announce that Syria will no longer be designated by the U.S. as a state sponsor of terrorism. The American official arrived in Damascus today, marking a new milestone in the improving relations between the two nations following the fall of Bashar al-Assad. Relations between the new Syrian authority and the United States have gradually improved since the fall of the former president’s regime. In late December, an American delegation led by Barbara Leaf, responsible for the Middle East at the State Department, visited Damascus for initial contact with the new Syrian leaders.
