US State Department: America No Longer Mediating Peace Talks Between Ukraine and Russia

In a bombshell announcement on Friday afternoon (May 2, 2025), the US State Department declared that the United States will no longer serve as the primary mediator in peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Spokesperson Tammy Brooks stated that the US is changing its role in the conflict and will begin setting boundaries regarding their diplomatic travels for peace talks. She emphasized that assistance in negotiations would continue but noted that the US will no longer travel extensively to mediate discussions. Earlier, Vice President Jay N. Vas warned that the war in Ukraine does not appear close to ending and placed the responsibility for reaching a peace agreement squarely on the shoulders of Ukraine and Russia. Brooks told reporters, ‘The US is altering how it contributes to negotiations and will no longer travel globally for meetings. We will continue to assist but won’t act as mediators worldwide.’ She added, ‘It’s now up to both parties to present concrete ideas to end this conflict. It’s in their hands.’ The State Department also clarified that existing sanctions will not be lifted, and President Trump wants all actions taken by the nation to be conducted diplomatically. Analysts suggest this move might pressure Vladimir Putin to reach an agreement with Ukraine. Meanwhile, Donald Trump reportedly signed the first round of arms deliveries from his administration to Kyiv, according to The Telegraph. Earlier, Vice President Vas had warned that there must be genuine progress in the Ukraine-Russia peace talks or Trump would reassess the time dedicated to the issue.
