Emergency Measures Across States
Authorities in multiple U.S. states have implemented emergency protocols for July 4, citing serious health risks for people spending extended time outdoors. Dozens of scheduled events—including major parades and public gatherings—have already been scrapped or rescheduled.
National Mall Closure in Washington, D.C.
In Washington, D.C., the Great American State Fair exhibition at the National Mall—a centerpiece of the nation’s 250th-anniversary commemorations—closed early in the afternoon as temperatures soared to 38°C (100°F). Organizers announced the site will remain closed until weather conditions improve. In the meantime, air-conditioned tents and cooling stations are being set up to protect visitors from extreme heat.
Public Health Warnings
Meteorologists and government officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, limit sun exposure, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion. So far, events have been canceled in at least seven states—including Philadelphia’s historic Independence Day Parade, celebrations at Tacoma Park in Maryland, and festivities in Loudoun County, Virginia.
