US Considers Tariffs Below 25% on Canada and Mexico

President Trump is set to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada this Tuesday, March 4, 2025, but the levels are still under consideration, according to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. Both Mexico and Canada have taken significant steps to address Trump’s concerns about border crossings, but not enough regarding the ‘fentanyl deaths in America,’ Ross stated on Fox News. Ross mentioned that Trump is contemplating how to proceed with Mexico and Canada, describing the situation as fluid. Trump had previously proposed imposing 25% tariffs on both nations but indicated that the percentage might be lower. This suggests a final diplomatic effort by Mexico and Canada to prevent the measures, which were delayed last month. Meanwhile, Trump plans to impose additional 10% tariffs on China starting Tuesday, adding to the 10% already implemented this month. Trump also hinted at extending his global trade war to Canada’s lumber industry, ordering the Commerce Department to investigate dumping in the U.S. market. China appears to have little room for negotiation before Tuesday and has vowed to retaliate to protect its interests. Last week, Beijing announced stricter controls on fentanyl precursors and similar substances. In a CBS poll released Sunday, Trump received marginally positive ratings for handling the economy but not inflation. Fifty-one percent of Americans approved of his economic management, while 46% supported his approach to inflation. The survey revealed that both Democrats and Republicans overwhelmingly want Trump to focus more on the economy and inflation rather than borders, tariffs, and federal workforce issues.
