University of York to Submit Application for Branch Campus in Greece

A branch campus of higher education seems to be on the horizon for the University of York, one of the top British universities, as announced by its principal and president, Charlie Jeffery. “I welcome the decision of the Greek government to support the establishment of foreign university branches in Greece. I am pleased to announce that the University of York will submit an application to establish its European campus, CITY, in Thessaloniki and Athens, aiming to further develop higher education and establish Greece as an international education hub,” stated the principal of the University of York. The public British University of York consistently ranks among the top universities in the UK, Europe, and globally, as confirmed by the latest ‘Times Higher Education’ rankings for 2025, which place York at 146th worldwide. It is also a member of the prestigious Russell Group, comprising 24 leading UK research universities, and has been recognized for its research quality (Top 10, REF 2021) and teaching excellence with the Gold TEF award (2023). With this decision, York will enhance its existing collaboration with CITY College in Thessaloniki, which already boasts students and alumni from over 60 countries. CITY will become the European Campus of York under the name ‘University of York Europe Campus, CITY U.L.E’, operating as a Legal Entity for University Education with main offices and facilities in Thessaloniki and a new branch in Athens. Initially, the University of York will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Thessaloniki through three Schools: Business, Science (Departments of Informatics and Psychology), and Law & Humanities (Departments of Law and Humanities). In Athens, it will provide similar programs focusing on Informatics. Preparations are underway for York to move into new facilities designed to support a dynamic academic environment starting next academic year. In Thessaloniki, operations will take place in two central buildings and a complete university campus in Oreokastro, spanning 14,000 sqm with lecture halls, laboratories, conference center, and indoor/outdoor sports facilities. In Athens, a cutting-edge hub for Informatics studies will be created, featuring modern installations tailored for technology education and innovation.
