The wildfires on the island of Chios continue to rage uncontrollably across three fronts since early Sunday afternoon (June 22, 2025), prompting urgent reinforcements from other regions. According to reports, residents and firefighters are battling fiercely to protect homes from the encroaching flames. Chios Mayor Ioannis Malafis, speaking to newsit.gr, emphasized the gravity of the situation despite extraordinary efforts by firefighters and locals, stating that multiple firebreaks have emerged, complicating the response further. A fourth fire has now ignited near Agios Markos, exacerbating conditions. While flames have reached residential yards in several areas, swift action managed to extinguish them before significant damage occurred; however, some warehouses have been destroyed. Significant firefighting resources, including teams from Thessaloniki and Piraeus, are en route to assist. Airborne firefighting efforts were ongoing until nightfall with two aircraft and eleven helicopters involved. Ground support includes water trucks and machinery from the Greek Army and local authorities. Evacuation orders have been issued for various regions, including Barbasi, Euriti, Babylona, Karies, Dafnonas, Verberato, Halkio, Vasilioniko, Gro, and Ziphias. The mayor urged caution and praised the collaborative efforts but warned of the immense challenges ahead. Efforts are underway to fully evacuate the VIAL refugee center due to the proximity of the fires.
