A baby’s cry brought hope to Venezuela amid the devastation left by a pair of deadly earthquakes. At the same time, one mother digs barehanded through collapsed buildings searching for her missing son. These harrowing stories emerged after two powerful quakes — measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale — struck northern Venezuela seconds apart, marking the country’s worst seismic disaster in over a century.

Heavy Toll and Ongoing Rescue Efforts

So far, at least 589 people have been confirmed dead, more than 4,300 injured, and tens of thousands remain unaccounted for beneath the rubble. Rescue teams are racing against time to locate survivors trapped in the wreckage.

Birth Amid the Ruins

Videos circulating on social media show a woman giving birth inside the ruins, assisted by rescuers who rushed to her side. With no doctors, electricity, or medical equipment available, volunteers reportedly delivered the baby using flashlight beams as their only light source. Details about the health of both mother and newborn remain scarce.

A Mother’s Desperate Search

In La Guaira — the northern Venezuelan region hardest hit by the twin quakes — Amparo del Giudice digs with her bare hands through a mountain of concrete and debris, calling out for her son. One of the victims of Venezuela’s strongest earthquake since 1900, he remains buried somewhere beneath the rubble.

‘There’s so much rock — it’s impossible with bare hands!’ she says, exhausted and sitting just meters from where she believes her son is trapped. ‘My son is here — please, send rescue teams,’ she pleads, her voice breaking with grief.

Journalists from Agence France-Presse (AFP) report that the true death toll may be significantly higher than the official count of 589, as vast areas remain inaccessible and recovery efforts continue under extreme conditions.
