An emergency session of the United Nations Security Council was convened on Friday, June 20, 2025, following a request by Guyana, which holds the presidency for June. The Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the UN, Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani, sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council accusing Israel of launching a large-scale attack against Iran. According to the Iranian envoy, Israel carried out targeted strikes on critical infrastructure, residential areas, hospitals, Red Crescent headquarters, and nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards on June 13. These actions are described as a serious violation of international law and a direct threat to regional and global peace. Additionally, Iran accused the U.S. of direct involvement in this unlawful war campaign. Iran demanded immediate condemnation and action from the Security Council to prevent further destabilization. Ambassador Iravani emphasized that the Council cannot remain a passive observer and must act under Article 39 of the UN Charter. The letter also highlighted the role of the UN Secretary-General in addressing the crisis promptly. Failure to act would undermine the credibility of the UN and encourage further aggression. Iran reiterated its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
