The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, condemned the June 22nd terrorist attack on the Holy Shrine of Prophet Elijah in Damascus, offering condolences to the families of the victims and wishes for the recovery of the injured. He emphasized that those responsible for terrorist acts must be held accountable following a preliminary investigation. Additionally, he called for a full investigation and reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting the Syrian people in their pursuit of peace, dignity, and justice. “We have seen minorities in Syria tested. I also believe we have seen the government making significant efforts to calm these minorities. It is imperative that transitional authorities ensure all minorities—whether religious, ethnic, or otherwise—feel welcome and that their voices are heard in Syria,” stated the UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a press briefing at the international organization’s headquarters. The suicide bombing at the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elijah in Douweila, Damascus, claimed the lives of at least 22 people.
