Ukraine Launches Drone Strike on Moscow Oil Refinery Amid Escalating Cross-Border Attacks

In a dramatic escalation of the war, Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack targeting a major oil refinery in Moscow’s Kapotnya district — marking one of the deepest strikes into Russia’s heartland to date. The assault unfolded during a tense night of reciprocal attacks, with both Ukrainian and Russian forces striking each other’s capitals: Kyiv and Moscow.

Fire and Smoke Over Kapotnya

Witnesses reported thick smoke and flames rising over the southern outskirts of Moscow, where the refinery is located. According to an eyewitness speaking to Reuters, explosions rocked the area repeatedly. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed on Telegram that Russian air defenses were still repelling a ‘massive drone attack,’ and that ‘many drones reached the Moscow refinery.’ He added that nearby residential buildings, an industrial facility, and a high-rise apartment complex sustained damage.

Airport Disruptions and Wider Regional Impact

Moscow’s busiest airport, Sheremetyevo, temporarily suspended flights and evacuated terminals amid the alert. Operations resumed shortly after the immediate threat appeared to subside.

The Kapotnya refinery had already been hit earlier in the week — making this the second Ukrainian strike on the same facility within days. Meanwhile, in Russia’s southern Rostov region, regional governor Yuri Slyusar reported one fatality and two injuries following a drone strike that triggered a fire at a commercial complex. A train was also damaged in the city of Gukovo after another drone attack, he said.

Scale of the Assault

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed it shot down 555 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions overnight. Sobyanin separately stated that approximately 180 drones aimed at Moscow were intercepted. Despite those efforts, a significant number breached air defenses — underscoring growing Ukrainian capabilities to penetrate deep into Russian territory.

Simultaneous Russian Strikes on Kyiv and Ukraine

As Ukrainian drones struck Moscow, Russia launched its own barrage on Kyiv. Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, warned via Telegram that ‘the enemy is attacking the capital with ballistic missiles’ and urged residents to seek shelter until the air raid alert ends.

Explosions were heard across Kyiv, according to eyewitness accounts relayed to Reuters. In Sumy, a city in eastern Ukraine, local authorities confirmed one civilian killed in a separate drone strike.

War Enters Fifth Year With No Diplomatic Breakthrough

Now more than four years into the conflict — Europe’s deadliest since World War II — diplomatic prospects remain bleak. While Russia continues near-daily strikes across Ukraine, Kyiv has increasingly shifted focus to strategic targets inside Russia, particularly energy infrastructure far from the front lines.
