While global attention remains — and rightly so — focused on the U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran, developments continue to unfold in the war between Ukraine and Russia, progressing at their own pace.
1,000 Prisoners Exchanged Amid Ongoing Peace Efforts
This week, Ukraine and Russia carried out a major prisoner-of-war exchange involving 1,000 individuals, according to Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Witkoff announced the development on March 6, 2026, in a post on the social media platform X.
In his message, Witkoff stated: “This week, Ukraine and Russia carried out another prisoner exchange, with 1,000 individuals returned following agreements reached during the recent trilateral negotiations in Geneva with the United States.”
Role of U.S.-Led Diplomacy
Witkoff credited the exchange to “sustained and detailed peace negotiations” conducted under the direction of President Trump. He emphasized that talks are ongoing and that further progress is expected in the coming weeks.
