Tzaneio Hospital: Family Donates Organs After Fatal Blood Transfusion Mistake

in

The family of a 62-year-old woman who suffered a fatal medical error at Tzaneio Hospital has made the courageous decision to donate her organs. The woman, who was admitted with stroke-like symptoms, received a blood transfusion of the wrong blood type due to a miscommunication between nurses, leading to multiple organ failure and severe brain damage.

“We lost our mother; it’s very heavy. It feels like a part of us is gone. But we must go on,” said one of her sons. Despite their grief, the family chose to give life by donating her organs, calling it the minimum they could offer in this tragic situation.

Medical staff at the intensive care unit were thanked for their efforts during this difficult time. Over the coming days, final tests will determine if brain death has occurred—a month after the tragic mistake. The family’s lawyer, Ath. Alexopoulos, noted that this marks a stage of saying goodbye, while also offering hope through donation.

This incident has once again raised concerns over hospital protocols and patient safety at public healthcare facilities in Greece.
