A significant development has occurred in the high-profile case that sparked widespread public outrage: two police officers have been convicted for the rape of a 19-year-old woman inside the Omnoia Police Station in Athens. The court sentenced one officer to four years and five months’ imprisonment, while the other received a four-year sentence with suspension pending appeal to the Court of Appeals.
Reduced Sentences Due to Good Conduct
The court recognized the mitigating factor of good conduct for both defendants.
Verdict and Charges
Earlier, judges of the Mixed Jury Court of Athens found both officers guilty by majority vote. The charge was downgraded from gang rape to joint rape without consent. One of the two officers was also unanimously convicted of unlawfully processing personal data — reportedly having secretly recorded the assault using a camera concealed in his bag.
Third Officer Acquitted
In contrast, a third officer accused of complicity in the rape was acquitted by majority vote.
