Two Earthquakes Hit Turkey with Magnitudes 4.2 and 3.9 Richter: Chios and Istanbul Shake

The region is once again feeling the tremors on the Richter scale. Two new earthquakes struck today (01.07.2025) in the southeastern part of the Marmara Sea area, intensifying fears among locals of a larger quake. The first earthquake occurred at 11:47 AM local time in the Marmara Sea, registering a magnitude of 3.9 Richter. Its focal depth was calculated at 9.82 kilometers. The second earthquake followed just minutes before 1 PM (Greek time), measuring 4.2 Richter, with its epicenter located at a depth of 10.14 kilometers. According to local reports, the tremor was felt in Istanbul, Bursa, and surrounding regions. The Kandilli Observatory in Istanbul recorded the second quake at 4.4 degrees and the first at 4 degrees, with focal depths of 4.8 and 5.3 kilometers respectively.
