Tusk Meets Erdoğan in Ankara: Turkey Urged to Lead Peace Efforts in Ukraine

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk met today (12/03/2025) in Ankara with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The meeting followed an invitation from Erdoğan to Tusk, focusing on developments surrounding the war in Ukraine and the new architecture of European security. During a joint press conference after the meeting, Erdoğan stated that he discussed possible steps to end the war in Ukraine and exchanged views on the future of European security with the Polish leader. Tusk emphasized that he urged Turkey to take “the greatest possible responsibility for the peace process, ensuring stability and security in the entire region,” adding that today’s meeting with Erdoğan was a “turning point.” Erdoğan described positively Ukraine’s acceptance of the ceasefire and expressed hope that Russia would respond constructively. He noted Turkey’s readiness to contribute in any way, including hosting negotiations. Both leaders highlighted their countries’ importance as key NATO allies in Eastern Europe and the South, possessing two of NATO’s largest land armies. Erdoğan reiterated Turkey’s strategic goal of full EU membership, stating that if the EU wants to prevent or reverse its loss of power and influence, it must fully integrate Turkey. Tusk expressed hope that Turkey’s accession process would become realistic and tangible, noting Poland’s continued support for Turkey in this matter. They also agreed to work together for stability in Syria and explored further expanding bilateral relations, with Tusk emphasizing strong defense industry partnerships between the two nations.
