Hundreds of Turkish immigrants gathered in Berlin on March 30, 2025, demonstrating their support for the ousted mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu. This protest comes after İmamoğlu’s arrest, which has sparked widespread reactions across Turkey. According to organizers, around 1,000 Turkish expatriates participated in the rally held in Berlin, while local police estimated the crowd at about 400 demonstrators. Many protesters wore masks featuring İmamoğlu’s face and carried signs reading “We are all İmamoğlu.” Similar protests have occurred in several European cities. Muharem Doğan, a 75-year-old retired merchant living in Germany since 1971, criticized Erdoğan’s government, stating that Turkey is heading in the wrong direction under his leadership. Sembenem Turhan, a 27-year-old archaeology student, condemned mass arrests and democratic rights violations in Turkey. The protest movement, which began in Turkey on March 19, is the largest since the Gezi Park protests in 2013. On March 29, hundreds of thousands of Turks rallied on the Asian side of Istanbul in solidarity with İmamoğlu. Approximately three million people of Turkish descent reside in Germany, many being descendants of guest workers who arrived during the 1960s and 1970s. In the last Turkish elections in 2023, 67% of Turkish voters in Germany supported Erdoğan.
