Turkish Geology Professor Warns of Potential 9-Richter Earthquake Between Rhodes and Turkey

Concern has spread across both Greece and Turkey following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck on June 3, 2025, near the Marmara Sea, tragically claiming the life of a 14-year-old. In statements to Turkish media, geology professor Suleiman Pampl emphasized that the region is located in active fault lines, predicting catastrophic earthquakes with magnitudes up to 9 Richter. “There will definitely be larger earthquakes in this area; there’s no doubt about it,” he stated in an interview with the Turkish website ‘haberler.’ He further explained in another statement to the newspaper ‘Hurryiet’ that historical records indicate numerous major earthquakes have occurred in the region, making future occurrences inevitable. Referring to the presence of a subduction zone, Pampl highlighted how this forms what is known as the ‘Cyprus Arc,’ stretching from Cyprus to Antioch and intersecting with the Eastern Anatolia Fault Zone and the Dead Sea Fault. He warned that earthquakes of magnitude 8 to 8.5 or even 9 Richter could strike the area, given similar events have happened historically.
