In remarks made during a press briefing in Ankara, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan addressed the ongoing Cyprus issue. Speaking at an iftar dinner, where Muslims break their fast during Ramadan, Fidan highlighted the imbalance between the communities on the island. According to state-run TRT, Fidan stated that the UN Secretary-General had appointed a personal envoy last year. The former Colombian Foreign Minister conducted evaluations and discussions over six months, concluding that there was no common ground between the two sides. Fidan emphasized that one community is recognized as a state with access to various opportunities, while the other remains unrecognized. This disparity, he argued, perpetuates injustice on the island, which must be eliminated. Furthermore, the head of Turkish diplomacy noted that past UN resolution plans were rejected by Greek Cypriots despite Turkey’s trust in international mediation. Today, the situation has changed, and this reality should reflect in the pursuit of a political solution.
