Trump’s Proclamation on Greek Independence Day: Honoring the Heroic Struggle for Freedom

in

On March 25, 1821, with the rallying cry of ‘Freedom or Death,’ Greek revolutionaries initiated their independence war against the Ottoman Empire. The hard-fought victory established an independent Greek state and homeland. In the 204th anniversary of Greek Independence Day, we honor this heroic struggle for freedom and timeless democratic ideals that continue to inspire the world, as stated in the proclamation signed by Donald J. Trump. ‘America is inseparably linked with both ancient and modern Greece. Our shared history and tradition, the fight for self-governance, resilience, and renewal bind us together. Our founders drew inspiration from Greek philosophers and statesmen to shape the principles of our new Democracy, now enshrined in our Constitution.’ The national character has been shaped partly by the enduring influence of Greek contributions to arts and architecture, language and literature, academic and military traditions. Today, across the United States, generations of Greek-Americans enrich our neighborhoods and communities with a rich legacy of cultural traditions, family heritage, faith, hospitality, and civic responsibility. Greece remains one of our nation’s oldest friends, a strategic partner, and a valuable NATO ally. We appreciate Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ support in our economic and diplomatic partnership as we develop cooperation opportunities in key areas such as energy, science, technology, shipping, supply chains, and defense. The permanent presence of naval forces at Souda Bay and bilateral educational events enhance military capabilities and reflect our mutual commitment to cooperation as a cornerstone of security and stability in Europe. On this day, we pause to celebrate Greek independence, people of Greek heritage worldwide, and the enduring kinship of like-minded nations that cherish democracy, patriotism, prosperity, and peace. Now, I, Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 25, 2025, as Greek Independence Day: A National Day of Celebration of Greek and American Democracy. I call upon the people of the United States to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
