According to Politico, Trump’s communication guru is working with Sali Berisha in Albania’s elections. Chris LaCivita, a key strategist for Trump’s campaigns and Republican electoral strategies, supports the former Albanian president, Sali Berisha, as the opposition aims to regain power after 12 years of Edi Rama’s governance. Berisha seeks a political comeback despite corruption allegations ahead of critical national elections on May 11, 2025. LaCivita’s choice aligns Berisha with Trump’s rhetoric in a country strategically important to both the U.S. and Europe due to its vulnerability to Russian and Chinese influence. Democratic Party representative Alfred Lela noted that LaCivita has advised both Trump and Berisha, highlighting their similar profiles as outsiders targeted by elites. At a public event, LaCivita said, “With a thriving democracy and true friendship with America, we can make Albania great again,” echoing Trump’s campaign slogan. Berisha, who served as president and twice as prime minister, stepped down from party leadership in 2013 but faced expulsion, legal scrutiny, and house arrest over corruption charges. However, he regained his party leadership in late 2024. While trailing in polls, the diaspora vote and unreliable polling leave room for an upset. Meanwhile, Edi Rama, seeking re-election since 2013, emphasizes Albania’s European journey. Despite efforts to engage Trump’s circle, including granting Jared Kushner significant investments, Rama faces challenges in uniting the nation amid fierce political rivalry. The ultimate stakes involve Albania’s EU accession by 2030.
