Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States is ‘taking control’ of the Strait of Hormuz, linking the move to Iran and global oil markets.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump claimed Iran had violated the agreement previously reached with the United States. He added that Washington would now act as the ‘guardian’ of the strategic waterway — a narrow passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes.

Trump stated that the U.S. expects to be compensated for this role, saying, ‘We will be paid for guarding the Strait.’

The former president also launched a fresh verbal attack on Iran’s leadership, calling them ‘a bad group of people.’
