US President Donald Trump is expected to submit an offer described as a ‘last chance’ proposal to Iran, according to American and European officials speaking to The Jerusalem Post on Monday (June 16). One official noted that the new proposal might even be slightly better than the previous one presented to Iran about a week and a half ago. Expectations are that any such proposal will still adhere to the American principle of zero uranium enrichment. Diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire are intensifying as Iran has approached Oman and Qatar to mediate with the Trump administration to halt Israeli strikes and continue negotiations regarding its nuclear program. Saudi Arabia is also working discreetly through a separate channel to promote a ceasefire. Trump confirmed earlier on Monday that Iran had reached out to the US in an effort to stop Israeli attacks. An Israeli official stated that Israel has not received any formal approach yet. Meanwhile, current negotiations are ongoing between Tehran and Washington while Israel continues targeting more Iranian sites. The US government confirmed on Monday that the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz will arrive in the Middle East, along with approximately 30 refueling aircraft. While preparations are underway for potential involvement in strikes if Trump gives the green light, there remains internal debate within the administration over US participation in Israeli military actions. Former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East Affairs Dan Shapiro told the Post that Trump is deploying necessary military means to strike Iran, including Fordoo facilities. However, this does not necessarily mean he has decided to attack but could use the threat as leverage to pressure Iran back to the negotiating table to halt uranium enrichment aimed at building nuclear weapons.
