Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to European nations considering a digital services tax (DST) on American tech companies. In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared that any country imposing such a tax would face immediate 100% tariffs on all goods exported to the United States.
A Direct Challenge to European Fiscal Policy
Trump stated that several European countries are actively discussing — and in some cases nearing adoption of — a Digital Services Tax targeting U.S.-based firms. He framed the move as discriminatory and warned it would trigger automatic, sweeping trade penalties.
“Any country that imposes such a tax will immediately face 100% tariffs on all products it exports to the U.S.,” Trump wrote. He emphasized that these tariffs would override any existing or pending trade agreement with the United States — whether already in force, signed but not yet implemented, or still under negotiation.
Immediate Enforcement, No Exceptions
According to Trump’s statement, the 100% tariff would take effect the moment a country enacts its digital tax legislation — with no grace period or diplomatic缓冲. The announcement reignites longstanding transatlantic tensions over how to tax multinational digital platforms, a dispute previously addressed — though not fully resolved — through international efforts led by the OECD.
