Trump Sends Letter to Ayatollah Khamenei for Talks on Iran’s Nuclear Program

US President Donald Trump is determined to proceed with substantial negotiations with Iran regarding its nuclear program, a move he also discussed with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a recent phone call. According to Axios, Trump sent a letter to Iran’s supreme religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, requesting the initiation of talks about Iran’s nuclear program. This revelation was made during an interview with Fox Business Network, set to air on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Trump stated, “I said [in the letter] that I hope you will negotiate because it will be a very positive development for Iran.” He added, “I think they want to receive this letter. The alternative is that we must do something because you cannot allow another nuclear weapon.” The White House did not respond to a request for comment. Bloomberg reported earlier that Trump had asked Putin to mediate discussions between the US and Iran concerning issues like Iran’s nuclear program and pro-Iranian organizations’ actions in the Middle East. Russia responded positively, aiming to facilitate diplomatic contacts. Additionally, Russia confirmed today that Iran’s nuclear program will be on the agenda at upcoming talks between Russian and American officials. It is worth noting that Trump reinstated the ‘maximum pressure’ campaign last month, aimed at reducing Iran’s oil exports to zero to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Iran denies any such intention.
