According to The New York Post, former U.S. President Donald Trump is supporting Gianni Infantino—the current president of FIFA—for the position of next United Nations Secretary-General, succeeding António Guterres.
A Close Alliance Built Around the World Cup
The 56-year-old Swiss football administrator has cultivated a close relationship with Trump in recent months, particularly through preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup—co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Infantino reportedly went to great lengths to engage and impress Trump, including presenting him with FIFA’s Peace Award during the tournament’s draw ceremony in Washington, D.C.
A source close to Trump told the newspaper that the former president believes Infantino “is respected by everyone around the world” and recognizes his “unique ability to bring people together.”
Controversy Shadows the Bid
Yet Infantino currently faces the most serious scrutiny of his entire career. Questions have arisen over whether Trump’s apparent endorsement may be linked to FIFA’s earlier decision—reportedly influenced by a direct call from Trump—to allow American international player Balogun to play against Belgium despite having been sent off in a prior match. The incident drew criticism over perceived interference in sporting integrity.
Guterres, the incumbent Portuguese diplomat, is set to step down at the end of December. The next UN Secretary-General will be elected this year. To secure the post, any candidate—including Infantino—must first win approval from the 15-member UN Security Council, where the five permanent members hold veto power, followed by formal confirmation from the UN General Assembly.
