The White House, under President Donald Trump, is preparing mass layoffs of federal employees within two days, according to Russell Vought, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, as reported by Bloomberg on Wednesday, October 1. Speaking to Congress, Vought signaled that Republicans intend to use the government shutdown as leverage to pressure Democrats into conceding on policy demands, including rolling back regulatory ‘lockdowns.’ Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that job cuts would happen “imminently, very soon,” though she declined to specify which agencies or positions would be affected. The administration has already halted $18 billion in federal infrastructure funding for New York projects, including the Second Avenue Subway and Hudson Tunnel. Vought cited concerns over diversity and equity policies, directly impacting Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, both representing New York. Additionally, $8 billion in renewable energy funding across over a dozen states that supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 election will be slashed. The move aligns with Trump’s earlier warning to target ‘Democratic issues’ during funding delays. Vought’s office has directed federal agencies to prepare plans for large-scale workforce reductions beyond typical furloughs, aiming to downsize federal bureaucracy.
