U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed he has not yet approved a new package of military aid or arms sales to Taiwan, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned from Beijing on Friday, May 15, 2026, following his talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. He left open the possibility of doing so in the future.
“I haven’t approved it yet — I may do it, I may not,” Trump said, offering no further clarification and emphasizing he had committed to nothing on the issue. He also reaffirmed that U.S. policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged.
“Nothing has changed,” he added, without elaborating on potential next steps by his administration regarding Taiwan.
After the meeting with Xi, Trump stressed he does not see an active conflict over Taiwan: “I don’t think there’s a conflict over Taiwan.”
On Iran, Trump said Xi Jinping is “deeply convinced” that Tehran must not acquire nuclear weapons. “He is deeply convinced the Iranians should not have a nuclear weapon, and he wants to reopen the Strait [of Hormuz],” Trump said, referring to the strategically vital waterway.
