In a significant development, US President Donald Trump addressed the press following the NATO Summit in The Hague on Wednesday afternoon (June 25). According to the joint statement from the summit, leaders of NATO member states agreed on crucial defense spending increases. Trump emphasized that NATO countries committed to ‘dramatic increases’ to strengthen collective defense. “We increased NATO countries’ defense spending by 5%, with some countries not contributing anything before—we changed that,” Trump stated, alongside US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Following the historic vote by members to boost their defense budgets by 5% of GDP, a commitment aimed at reassuring anxious European allies was made. Trump stressed that the new funds should be directed toward purchasing ‘serious military equipment’ rather than being absorbed by bureaucracy. The goal, according to Trump, is to prevent future conflicts like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He also commented that Russian President Vladimir Putin may have ambitions beyond Ukraine. Trump described the summit’s achievements as ‘tremendous,’ noting that the main discussion point was the need for NATO members to shoulder the burden of Europe’s defense. “Iran will not have nuclear weapons; we blew them out of the sky,” he remarked. “I am very proud of the operation in the Middle East. I believe it was a complete disappearance; I think they didn’t manage to save anything because we acted quickly. It’s very difficult and dangerous to remove such material,” he underscored. “We hit so hard and so fast that they didn’t have time to move anything,” Trump said when asked about reports that Iranians had managed to transfer large quantities of uranium before the Americans struck their three nuclear sites.
