The president-elect of the United States sent a clear message to “do what he must” for the truce. In particular the elected President Donald Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “continue to do what needs to be done”, while stressing his desire to end the war between Israel and Hamas. CORVERSE Trump told NBC News in a phone interview Saturday (18/01/2025) that he plans to meet with Netanyahu “soon enough”, but refused to share more details about a possible meeting. He said he told Netanyahu that “this should end”, but that you should “just keep doing what you have to do”. When asked if he is sure that hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza will be released under the agreement, Trump said: “Well, we’ll see it very soon, and better keep”. He added that the US would demand “respect” to ensure that the agreement would be respected and warned of the consequences if it did not apply. “The United States must be respected again and must be respected quickly. But respect is the primary word I use,” he said. “If they respect us, it will last. If we are not respected, hell will break out.” Trump’s new national security consultant Mike Walts and his new envoy to the Middle East Steve Whitkov collaborated with the Biden government to facilitate the ceasefire agreement, which is expected to enter into force tomorrow.
