Trump Believes Greenland Annexation Is Just a Matter of Time – ‘No Way’, Says Mute Egede

The outgoing prime minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, stated today (13.03.2025) that he will call on political leaders to unanimously and categorically reject the new comments by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the annexation of the Arctic island. ‘The U.S. president has brought our annexation back into the spotlight,’ said Egede in a Facebook post. ‘No way,’ he emphasized. During his meeting at the White House with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rute, U.S. President Donald Trump earlier today expressed his belief that the U.S. would eventually annex Greenland. ‘I think it will happen,’ said the U.S. president, adding that ‘it is necessary for international security.’ Greenland, a former Danish colony, became part of Denmark in 1953. In 1979, it gained some autonomy and held its first parliamentary elections, but Copenhagen still determines Greenland’s foreign policy, defense, and monetary policy, providing approximately one billion dollars annually. In 2009, Greenland gained the right to declare full independence after a referendum, but it hasn’t done so due to concerns about the living standards of its residents worsening. The center-right opposition party Demokraatit, which won Tuesday’s election for local government leadership, supports independence from Denmark but not hastily. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has made it clear that Greenland is part of the kingdom and ‘not for sale.’
