Train Services Between Paris and Milan Suspended Due to Severe Storms

Extreme weather conditions continue despite being in the heart of summer. Train services between Paris and Milan have been suspended for ‘at least a few days’ following severe storms that occurred on Monday (June 30, 2025), around Modane in the Maurienne Valley, Savoie. The French national railway company, SNCF, announced that cleanup operations are underway to clear the railway tracks. So far, no significant damage has been reported to the rail infrastructure that would prolong the service suspension.

The disruptions began at 5:00 PM on Monday as storms erupted after a heatwave, causing major mudslides that covered the tracks at the Mont-d’Ambin station, the last stop before reaching the Italian border. SNCF operates three round-trip services daily between Milan and Paris. The two cities are also connected by Italy’s Trenitalia, which shares the same rail lines as the French operator.

The storms triggered historic flooding of the Charmaix torrent in the Alpine Maurienne Valley. Reports indicate one fatality. Cleanup efforts started this morning across the three most affected communities—Fournet, Modane, and Saint-Colomban-des-Villards—due to the unprecedented flood from the Charmaix stream. Around 100 basements, commercial premises, and public buildings were flooded.

Italy is also experiencing heavy storms and a heatwave.
