Tragic Suicide of Detainee in Kalamata Using a Sheet

A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday, June 16, 2025, when a 38-year-old Greek detainee ended his life inside the detention facilities of the Messinia Police Department. The man was found unconscious at around 3:30 AM during a routine check by the detention staff. Reports indicate that he used a sheet to commit suicide. Emergency services were immediately notified, and an ambulance rushed to the scene. Despite the best efforts of the medical team to revive him, the man was pronounced dead en route to Kalamata Hospital. The deceased had been detained in Nauplion for theft-related charges and was temporarily transferred to Kalamata. He had appeared before the Three-Member Felony Court on June 10 and was scheduled to appear before the Single-Member Court on June 19. An Official Administrative Investigation (OAI) has been ordered by the Messinia Police Directorate to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
