Tragic Incident: 87-Year-Old Man Kills Wife in Hospital and Attempts Suicide

A tragic event occurred on Saturday morning (May 31, 2025), inside a room at the Surgical Clinic when an 87-year-old man shot his 85-year-old wife before attempting to take his own life. According to reports from goodnet.gr, the elderly man from Rethymno was with his wife in the hospital room where she was being treated when he pulled out a weapon and fired. The victim had undergone surgery in recent days due to cancer and had been hospitalized for some time. In her final stages of cancer, the 85-year-old sustained fatal injuries. Subsequently, the 87-year-old turned the gun on himself, resulting in critical condition requiring treatment in the ICU. During the incident, their son was also present in the room but was locked on the balcony by the father before the shootings began. Security personnel from Rethymno are now stationed at the hospital.
