“We don’t know what might have caused it; there’s a possibility my brother suffered a blackout…”, said the daughter of the elderly couple who tragically lost their lives yesterday (03.03.2025) along with their 56-year-old son in the fiery pile-up in Katechaki. The incident resulted in the death of three family members. The vehicle driven by the 56-year-old, carrying his elderly parents as passengers, was involved in a severe collision with two other cars, leading to the loss of life for all three occupants. The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m., when the white car heading towards Mesogeion Avenue inexplicably veered off course and collided with a black vehicle stopped at a red light at the intersection with Pindou Street. The intensity of the crash triggered a chain reaction, causing the second vehicle to hit a taxi in front of it, while additional material damage was inflicted on two more cars. Emergency services rushed to the scene, where firefighters managed to extract the unconscious 56-year-old driver, his 91-year-old father, and 83-year-old mother. Four others—two from the second vehicle and two taxi passengers—sustained minor injuries and were transported to Gennimatas Hospital via ambulance. Traffic authorities are investigating the conditions under which the tragic accident occurred, considering two primary scenarios: either the 56-year-old failed to notice the red light or experienced a sudden health issue that caused him to lose control of the vehicle. Testimony from the deceased driver’s sister strengthens the possibility of the latter scenario, as she mentioned her brother may have suffered a blackout while driving. “For now, we don’t know what caused the accident; there’s a chance my brother had a blackout, but everything will be clarified later. Police are speculating for now; a judicial investigation will take place here,” she stated.
